Flanged Connections
Flanged connections are used when a strong, leak – proof connection is required, especially in high – pressure and high – temperature applications. A flange is a flat, circular disc with holes around the perimeter that is welded or screwed onto the end of the pipe. Two flanges are then bolted together with a gasket in between to create a seal.
Weld – Neck Flanges
Weld – neck flanges are welded to the pipe, which provides a strong and continuous connection. They are designed to transfer stress from the pipe to the flange, making them suitable for high – pressure and high – temperature applications. Weld – neck flanges require precise welding to ensure a proper fit and seal.
Slip – On Flanges
Slip – on flanges are slipped over the end of the pipe and then welded in place. They are easier to install compared to weld – neck flanges and are often used in low – pressure applications. However, they may not be as strong as weld – neck flanges, especially in high – stress situations.
Blind Flanges
Blind flanges are used to close the end of a pipe or a valve. They are bolted onto the flange of the pipe, providing a seal to prevent the flow of fluid or gas. Blind flanges are commonly used in pipeline maintenance and testing.
Compression Fittings
Compression fittings are a quick and easy way to connect steel pipe tubes without the need for welding or threading. They consist of a compression nut, a compression ring (ferrule), and a body. The tube is inserted into the fitting, and the compression nut is tightened, causing the ferrule to compress against the tube and the fitting body, creating a seal.
Compression fittings are suitable for low – to medium – pressure applications and can be used in both copper and steel pipes. They are easy to install and can be disassembled and reassembled multiple times. However, they may not be as reliable as welded or threaded connections in high – pressure or high – vibration environments.
Choosing the Right Connection Method

Pressure and Temperature
If the application involves high pressure and high temperature, welding or flanged connections are usually the best choices. Threaded connections can be used for medium – pressure applications, while compression fittings are suitable for low – pressure systems.
